Finding A Talented Plumber

Although it may seem simple to fix little things around your house, the fact of the matter is that there are a few professionals who really do work hard to make your life better. For instance, while you may be likely to paint your place on your own, even doing something as simple as switching out a toilet can be really challenging. I started thinking about how valuable professionals like plumbers were for my business, and I wanted to start a new blog that centered around how much a plumber can help to make your life better. Check out this website for tips on finding a talented plumber.

Finding A Talented Plumber

Cleaning Vs. Clearing—What's the Difference?

by Vernon Elliott

If you have a clog, it can be almost nauseating to wait and watch the water slowly disappear down the drain (if at all). You may decide to try some home-based remedies, such as hot water and soap, or a wire hanger, or you may decide to call a plumber to dislodge the clog for you. When you do, be sure to ask: Will you be cleaning the drain or just clearing the clog?

Though it may seem like a silly question, there is a huge difference between drain clearing and residential drain cleaning. Both can be effective to a certain point, but residential drain services fight to get rid of the entire clog, not just clear a hole for more water to pass through. Here's a few more difference between the two services.

Clearing Leaves Residue

If you're just looking for a clog to be cleared, chances are, the plumber will just insert a snake into your drain and punch a hole through the clog big enough to let some water through. That's not nearly a thorough enough job, however, since that clog could easily reform within weeks as more debris finds its way down the drain. Residential drain cleaning, on the other hand, usually uses higher water pressure (such as hydro-jetting) to not only clear the clog but get rid of all the other residue that clings to the walls. The sides of your pipes are literally "scrubbed" clean from the pressure, leaving you with a pipe that is virtually brand new.

Clearing Doesn't Go Deep

If you've got a surface-level clog in a relatively brand new house, then clearing your drain may be the best course of action. However, if you've got a clog that is deep down inside your pipes, a snake usually won't fully dislodge the obstruction, leaving your drain helpless. You'll need to hire a residential drain cleaning service to snake deep down inside the clog and use high water pressure to force the clog out and clean the residue left behind.

Is There Any Time You Should Just Clear the Clog?

Though cleaning a pipe is far superior to just clearing the clog, there is one situation that's ideal for drain clearing instead of cleaning: older homes. The piping system inside older homes is generally more fragile and susceptible to cracks if exposed to high water pressure, so unless the plumber deliberately chooses to clean the drain, you should always opt for a simple drain clearing.
