Finding A Talented Plumber

Although it may seem simple to fix little things around your house, the fact of the matter is that there are a few professionals who really do work hard to make your life better. For instance, while you may be likely to paint your place on your own, even doing something as simple as switching out a toilet can be really challenging. I started thinking about how valuable professionals like plumbers were for my business, and I wanted to start a new blog that centered around how much a plumber can help to make your life better. Check out this website for tips on finding a talented plumber.

What To Do If Your Toilet Won't Flush

by Vernon Elliott

We've all encountered a toilet that won't flush at some point in our lives. This is not the most fun problem to be dealing with but it's one that every homeowner should be prepared for. Even with proper maintenance and use, there are various parts of your toilet's flushing system that can become less effective over time. These issues can result in the toilet not flushing when you want it to.

For some people, the go-to move will be to call a plumber. However, there are other things you can do before you make that call.

Check the Water Level in the Tank

The water level in the cistern may be too low to allow for flushing. This is not an uncommon issue and usually takes place if the inlet valve is stuck. The valve may be stuck due to some obstruction or it may be damaged, in which case you'll have to replace it. Once you've removed the obstruction or replaced the inlet valve, monitor the water and see if it fills to the right level. The issue could also be a water supply problem. Check if other toilets and sinks have water.

Check for a Loose Chain

The rubber flapper in the cistern is lifted up by a chain when you turn the flushing handle. However, the chain can become loose or disconnected from the flapper. In either case, the flapper won't be lifted when you turn the handle, hence, the toilet won't flush. Reconnect the chain if it was disconnected or replace it if it has become loose.

Inspect the Flapper

The rubber flapper is what releases the water from the tank and into the toilet when you turn that handle. However, this rubber flapper can become bent, warped or damaged in some other way. You'll have to go to the hardware store to find a replacement for it.

Unclog the Pipes

If your pipes are clogged, you won't be able to flush your toilet either. You can easily tell if you're dealing with a clogged toilet because the water level in the toilet is likely to rise instead. You'll need to use a plunger or even an auger to dislodge whatever is clogging the toilet. If this doesn't fix the problem, the next step up is to call an emergency plumbing team to fix this issue before it causes a mess.

Call an Expert

Sometimes it can be a lot harder to know exactly why your toilet won't flush, and even if you do the solution may not be simple. Call a plumbing contractor who offers emergency plumbing services if you can't fix the issue.
