Finding A Talented Plumber

Although it may seem simple to fix little things around your house, the fact of the matter is that there are a few professionals who really do work hard to make your life better. For instance, while you may be likely to paint your place on your own, even doing something as simple as switching out a toilet can be really challenging. I started thinking about how valuable professionals like plumbers were for my business, and I wanted to start a new blog that centered around how much a plumber can help to make your life better. Check out this website for tips on finding a talented plumber.

No Water's Coming Out! What Could Be Wrong With Your Well?

by Vernon Elliott

When you turn on a tap in your home, you expect water to come out. So when the tap just sputters a little and stays dry, you're bound to be frustrated and worried! If you have well water, then you may fear that your well has run dry, but in fact, that is only one possible reason for your lack of water flow. Here is a closer look at the multiple problems that could be at play.

The Power Could Be Out

Your well pump is responsible for transporting the water from the well, through your pipes, and to the taps in your home. The well pump runs on power, and if the power goes out, the pump may not work if it does not have a battery backup. Check that the power is on, and then check the circuit to which the pump is connected. Has the circuit breaker tripped? If so, flip it back to the "on" position, and you should restore power to the pump.

In the future, you may want to invest in a backup battery or generator to keep your pump powered in the case of a power outage. If your pump has a backup battery and still did not function without power, this is a good sign you need a new battery or to remove and charge the battery.

The Pump Could Be Broken

If there is power going to the pump, you should next check the pressure gauge connected to the pump. Does the pressure read "0" or close to it? Then the pump is not working, even though it has power. You should have a well pump company come look over the pump. It could need anything from new bearings to a whole new motor. If the pressure reading is 30 or higher, then the pump is still working, but maybe not properly.

The Filter Could Be Blocked

If the pressure gauge is reading pretty high, say over 40, but you are still not getting any water to your taps, this could be because the water filter is clogged with debris. Water cannot pass through a clogged filter, so pressure will just keep building up in the system. Continuing to try to run a pump when the filter is blocked can cause the pump to break down and can even lead to leaking pipes. So if you suspect a clogged filter is to blame for your lack of water, turn the pump off ASAP. Then, change the filter. Briefly turn your system on and try to run the water again. If it still does not flow, call a well repair company rather than continuing to try to run the pump and risk damaging your system.

Your Well Could Be Dry

If you have ruled out problems with the power supply and the pump, then perhaps your well is running dry. This is pretty rare since wells are typically drilled deep enough to ensure a year-round water supply. If rain has been really scarce lately, you are in an area where water shortages are common, or you've run out of water before, this increases the likelihood that you're simply out. You may have to use bottled or packaged water until some rain comes and restores your water supply. Long-term, you may want to have a well drilling company either drill your well deeper or relocate it.

Having your water supply run out can be scary and frustrating. Often, it is just an issue with power, and you can fix the problem yourself in the span of a few minutes. Otherwise, there are reliable well repair companies around who can find a quick and viable solution. Contact a company like Action Well & Pump Repair for more information on diagnosing problems with your well.
